When two worlds collide by Molly L. 6th grade
Chapter 1
Jena first.
I did not want to spend another second in the room. ’tick, tick, tick’ went the annoying and rusty clock that sat on the back wall over the teacher. Who of course sounded like she would never end with our stupidly annoying lesson. I know I know the worst part to come in my life. School. My horrible, old, rotting, molding, falling apart school. Most of the girls at my school are afraid that the walls will collapse all around us. But not me. I am the smartest, toughest, roughest, most adventurous and dangerous person in this school.
Where are my manners (like I have any). I am Jena your average farm girl. But I am different. I don’t want to go to school. Or do my farm chores. Or have arranged marriages. I want to live by my own rules. And I want to live in the woods. ‘DRRing, Dring, ding,’ coughed the rusty old bell.
But just because it barely did its job it does not mean we needed a second warning. We ran out of the classroom like we were on fire. But as I did every day after school. I slid as close as I could to the wall letting all the other kids pass. As soon as the hall was empty and left only the stragglers behind, I stepped out on to the hallway path.
I took the familiar path that led to my little sister’s classroom. I stopped when I saw my little sister on the ground with 3 older boys relentlessly kicking her in to a corner. But just at the sight of me they ran off. I walked over and sat down on the floor next to her. I saw tears roll down her soft blood red checks.
“How long did they kick you” I asked, stroking her hair.
“A few minutes before the bell so not so long ago,” she said in a voice that sounded like she had not been crying.
“What did you do when they started to kick you?”
“Curled up in a ball.”
“Where did they kick you?”
“In the stomach.”
“Did you try to stop them from hitting your stomach?”
“Yes.”
“Did you succeed?”
“No.”
“How did you try to stop them from hitting your stomach?”
“Used my legs.”
“Did you use your arms?”
“No.”
“Where were your arms?”
“Over my head and face.”
“You did well,” I said smiling at her.
“But I did not stop them from hitting my stomach,” she said sadly, and looked up at me as if she where an injured bunny.
“It would be hard to stop something like that happening with only legs to block” I said sounding more responsible than I really am.
“So…” she said leaning in.
“So, what?”
“Did I pass?”
“Yep,” I said smiling. “You passed lesson one”
Maybe I should explain. Since I am seen as a threat they don’t want another me walking around so the older kids took it upon themselves to take action. So almost every day they bully her. So I have decided to train her how to fight. I wanted to train her when the time was right. But I could not be there for her every day. I picked her up and off we go.
I carried Emily out of the school. And like every day Mrs. Rakebatter, our nanny, came to school with her parcel and that sour look.
“There you are, come here.” She shouted like we were five miles away.
I put Emily down and held her hand. And then Mrs. Rakebatter ripped Emily away from me and gave a dirty look as she pulled her like a rag doll. As usual I hung back and when the time was right slipped into the woods.
I took my usual path that lead through the woods. I walked slowly along, taking in all the beauty. But in my walk I did not see the shadow behind me. Or the rough hands that pushed me. Until it was too late. At first I thought I was flying. But I realized. I was falling.
Wylie to the Rescue
I wake up at dawn with my family around me and keeping me warm. I get up and stretch. I give a howl and they all start to arise. All of us together in our pack we equal 17 including our unborn child. Mom after doing a test said it would be only one child and a girl. I mean, she has not been wrong yet. If I were to list us all from oldest to youngest it would look like this:
Mama (girl)
Dad (boy)
Track (boy)
Angel (girl)
Wylie (me, boy)
Breaker (boy)
Violet (girl)
Wish (girl)
Seven (girl)
Tick (girl) \
Tock (boy) / twins
Windchime (girl)
Tornado (Boy)
Bite (boy) \
Scratch (boy) / twins
Starlight (girl)
Firefly (girl)
Beast (boy)
? (girl)
There are ten girls and nine guys. As usual Angel helped Mama get out of the cave and to the stream. Dad, Track and Breaker left on a hunt for big animals. Violet and Wish still were inside even though they were awake.
At the first sound of my howl Seven had got up and ran. As she ran she trampled a bird. And Windchime ran out after her and also trampled on a bird. Windchime brought the birds back and then ran out again following Seven.
I want to go out and run too but something kept me inside. Seven walked back inside with Windchime following behind. Seven had come back to get the two twins, Tick and Tock, and Bite and Scratch. Tick and Tock are teaching Bite and Scratch how to hunt. Sadly bite wanders off too much. And Scratch does not pay attention. I don’t think they know how lucky they are. With Tick’s great eyes, Tock’s quickness and both of their smart brains and quick thinking there are the best team anyone can wish for. Even though Tick and Tock can take care of themselves, Seven is there for protection. Tick and Tock might be good, but Seven is better.
She has Tick’s eyes, Tock quickness, and not to mention the quick thinking that’s better than theirs by a lot. I mean technically they got trained by her so they got everything from her.
A small whimper came from Windchime. She was torn between staying with me or leaving with Seven. I knew this would go on forever if it could. I pushed her to the door with my hands telling her to go with Seven. She was happy that I did not mind. She licked my face and ran after Seven and her troop that was heading out into another part of the woods.
Mama fell back to sleep so Angel could not watch over the little ones, Firefly, Starlight, and Beast. Violet, Wish, and I can go and play and hunt. And so when the time came I could go to my special place.
As we went out of the cave to our right we saw Tornado. And next to him a big pile of fish. It was no surprise. Tornado was a really great fisher. I always took a couple seconds to watch him do his magic. First he would look into the water like he was staring into space. But, just when you thought he was done, he shot his paw in and out. And when he takes it out there is always a big fish on it. He used one paw to place on the fish to take his other paw out. Even though he never likes the feeling of the fish’s blood and guts, he does not put his hand back into the water. For everyone knows it will scare the fish.
Violet, Wish, and I ran through the forest. We played games, barked up trees, watched deer graze. We laughed and played, running and chasing. Until it was time to go to my special place.
I go here after the sun has hit middle of the sky. I go up close to people and out of the woods. When I am there I pick up pieces of conversation but the main reason I go up there is for a little girl.
Her hair is the color of sun with a bit of dirt mixed in. Her eyes are the color of the sky with no clouds. She is always carrying something on her back, but I never know what it is.
Today she came a little late. And there was a little boy following her. And when the ground beneath them is flat, the boy pushes her. And since it is a slope the way she was pushed, there were a few seconds before she hit the ground.
I know I am human but I have been taught that they are dangerous. I am not even allowed up here, what I did was an accident. It was only instinct. I reached out and I caught her.
The Meeting
Jena looked at him. Wylie looked at her. And then Jenna realized that he had pushed her. Angrily she threw herself from his arms. And then
