Cheetah by Thalia
From the Animal Poems project LEI conducted with the third graders of Roxboro Elementary School this fall.
I am a cheetah, spotted and swift.
I am a carnivore, I eat meat.
I hear a predator, I run and hide in the grass.
The wind is on my side blowing my scent away.
I open my mouth and taste the scent of my prey.
I quietly stalk the antelope, gathering all my strength in my haunches.
Suddenly, I spring, and I take a killing bite to its throat.
I quickly eat so no predator will steal my prize.
I smell another cheetah, waiting for it.
I turn around and defend my food.
I scrape the other cheetah’s belly, with my claws unsheathed.
My claws leave a horrible gash.
The other cheetah retreats.
I finish my dinner.
I am a cheetah, spotted and swift.
